Mid Norfolk Railway – A Day Out
So yesterday I opted for a day out in the sunshine and went to The Mid Norfolk Railway for a ride on one of their restored trains.
The railway is based at Dereham and runs south just over 11 miles to Wymondham. It also in due time will run north again. Hopefully all the way to the beautifully restored County School station.
The length of track between Dereham and Wymondham makes it the longest heritage railway in East Anglia where I am. It also puts it in the upper echelons nationally with not many featuring a ride of such length. Typically many heritage and steam railways run only a few miles, maybe 5 or 6.
Parking at Dereham station is free and generally easy unless there is a special event on. It doesn’t impact me, but families benefit from a fantastic kids go free offer when travelling. As I had a bit of time to kill before the train was due to go after having had a look around the station I got a bite to eat.
The food and service in the station team room never disappoints. Yesterday I opted for a bacon roll and I’m pleased to say it was tasty and well filled. The bacon comes from a local butcher and you can tell!. They also have a proud boast that all food is freshly made on site. The delicious cakes which are must try for any visitor.
